Verizon Wireless is a recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue. The company's HopeLine® program collects wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider, and then refurbishes the phones or recycles them in an environmentally friendly way.
Proceeds from the HopeLine program benefit victims of domestic violence and non-profit advocacy agencies, providing essential communication tools of wireless phones and wireless services, and financial grants. The company’s mission is to provide reliable wireless service to its customers, and through the HopeLine program, the company extends this reliable communication option to people who need it desperately—victims of domestic violence.
In 2007, more than 1,068,000 no-longer-used wireless phones were donated to the HopeLine program resulting in nearly $1.7 million in cash grants to more than 330 domestic violence agencies and organizations nationwide. Additionally, more than 20,000 HopeLine phones with airtime and other features were given to shelters and other organizations working to support victims of domestic violence.
Since October 2001, when Verizon Wireless launched HopeLine, the company has collected more than 4.5 million phones and awarded nearly $5 million in cash grants to organizations working to prevent and end domestic violence. HopeLine has also distributed more than 60,000 phones with more than 160 million minutes of free wireless service to be used by victims of domestic violence. The program has properly disposed of more than 1 million no-longer-used wireless phones in an environmentally sound way, and refurbished the remaining for resale and reuse.
